More Illegal Immigration

The uproar over the Arizona’s planned enforcement of illegal immigration laws continues to show the thought process of the people against such enforcement. Examination of the logic used shows why we may never all agree on anything.

There are some calling for boycotts of Arizona businesses to protest the law. There are others who plan on giving more of their business to Arizona to show support. But it is now reported that illegal immigrants — and groups that exist that support illegal immigration – – are planning to leave Arizona. So let me say this again: Illegal immigrants in Arizona are THREATENING to LEAVE Arizona because of this new law that seeks to reduce illegal immigration by making it illegal to be an illegal immigrant in Arizona.

“But why do you Americans hate us Mexicans?” one such illegal immigrant may ask. It is common to make this into a personal matter where people seek to be offended somehow because nowadays everybody seems to worry about offending someone. My response to the question is that it is the wrong question. Why do you think that we hate you? This is not even about you. We have Federal laws that require that certain procedures be followed in order to enter or remain legally in this country. Many countries have their own procedures, including Mexico.

A more useful question that prospective immigrants from any country should be asking is “How do I go about becoming an American citizen?” Perhaps the groups that profess to support illegal immigrants would be better off providing advice toward that goal rather than having “anti-hate” demonstrations.

Money is spent on the Big Government bureacracy that issues the so-called “green cards” which Federal law requires certain aliens to have in their possession. These cards prove that these individuals have gone through certain legal steps toward being in the United States legally. Illegal immigrants, as well as the Obama Administration are shocked by a law that allows police to look at these green cards and use them for their intended purpose. The law, they say, is unconstitutional because it only targets a certain group of people.

This is true. But all laws only target a certain group of people — or that is to say a certain group of people doing a certain thing that we have deemed illegal. Speeding laws target speeders. Robbery laws target robbers. Fraud laws target frauds. Immigration laws affect immigrants. The notion that a law that doesn’t apply to everybody equally should be considered unconstitutional is ridiculous. “Any laws that involve driving a car are unconstitutional because they unfairly target vehicle users – – some people don’t even own or use a car.” Nonsense.

The issue is not over hate and emotion, although it is often tempting to be lured into that easy comfort-zone of trying to be offended. I would instead encourage United States citizens to examine our current immigration laws and see if they are the way that we think they should be. We should then enforce the laws that we have. As for prospective immigrants, I would invite you to also find out about our laws and seek a legal way to become U.S. citizens too. Come join the party legally. Millions and millions already have!

Arizona's Illegal Immigrant Law

Arizona has passed a law that makes it illegal to be in this country, well, illegally. It also allows police to ask people about their immigration status — which was strangely not allowed before for fear of offending someone. It also makes it illegal to hire illegals as day laborers. In other words, it gives meaning to the term “illegal alien” which apparently, until this point, had just been an expression.

Naturally, the Obama White House is not amused. President Obama was said to be “amused” at Tea Partiers who strive for the values that made this country into a country in the first place, but this law to make it illegal to be an illegal is not amusing to him.

What is fascinating is that opponents to this bill exist at all. There are procedures that exist for entering and remaining in this country legally, earning those that comply the title of “immigrant” or “American citizen” as many have done before. Note that a change to those procedures is not under discussion, rather the mere non-enforcement is.

Some have said that this will lead to “profiling”. Well…yeah. This claim is almost laughable when one considers the fact that in order to prevent illegal entry of Mexicans, one may likely expect, well… Mexicans to be possible violators. Although this law presumably would affect illegal immigration from other countries as well, such immigration is apparently not the current problem in Arizona.

Arizona has an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants, and serves as the entry point for the majority of illegal immigrants and drugs moving north into the U.S. from Mexico. The White house is said to be looking into the legality of enforcing illegal immigration laws! This attitude certainly explains our current state of affairs.

From the Washington Post: The law sends “a clear message that Arizona is unfriendly to undocumented aliens,” said Peter Spiro, a Temple University law professor and author of the book “Beyond Citizenship: American Identity After Globalization.” but it is unclear to me from that quote whether or not Professor Spiro is for or against the law.

A newspaper story today showed a picture of a woman protesting the new Arizona law. Her T-shirt read “Stop the Hate”. This does not make any sense, or rather, does make sense only to the extent that she is trying to make the issue into something that it is not. I do not hate Mexicans. I believe that residents and lawmakers of Arizona by and large do not hate Mexicans either. Nor do I hate Mexican illegal aliens. Nor do I hate people who run red lights, people who steal, or people who break other laws. This is not an issue of hate. There are simply certain activities that the law does not allow, whoever may be the violators. Having demonstrations against hate is trying to solve a different problem. It is an attempt to sway the discussion away from logic and reason and into emotion and hurt feelings.

I would not be surprised to see some of the same preposterous appeasements used in airline security adopted here as well. This law targets people illegally entering the country through the Mexican border. Perhaps a racial quota will be developed where a certain number of other “profiles” will be asked to provide proof of citizenship to the police. As long as a 70 year old white woman in a wheel chair, a young white man in a military uniform, and a white priest are asked each day for identification, this should prove how “fair” the law is. Once again, bureaucratic methods of muddling the issue with the goal of appeasement until the original intent and effectiveness — and point– are lost.

So it is now official. The Obama Administration has shown that it plans on doing nothing toward stopping illegal immigration for fear that it may be seen as targeting illegal immigrants. Further, the administration has taken steps to nullify, if not disregard a state’s attempt to stem the tide. Certainly one quick and easy way to end any illegal activity is to simply make it legal with the stroke of a pen – or with that same executive pen, give orders to ignore the issue altogether.

The White House does not want to see illegal immigrants sent back out of this country. Illegal immigrants are a vast pool of potential Democrat voters. Once given amnesty, free medical care, free housing, free education, free legal counsel, free job training, free retirement plans, bilingual signs and free abortions by Democrats — paid for with the money of people who are against illegal immigration — you figure out who this freshly-minted voting bloc would vote for.

The Arizona immigration law is a simple and obvious law that is surprisingly not yet a federal law. Treating illegal immigrants as people breaking the law is not so shocking. It protects our country while rewarding those Americans who went through the proper channels and became citizens the legal way like so many have been doing for centuries.
