As President Obama travels the country on his campaign tour to try to sell Big Government Health Care to a public that has no choice in the matter, there are those that are ecstatic about what is in it for them. Newspapers carry stories about “what you will get” in this new Utopia. Already there is the list forming of things that Evil Republicans want to take away from the voting masses. As has been said in earlier columns here at T&S, the debate is over the wrong issue. It is a distraction to discuss whether the Big Government Takeover is a good idea or not.
The issue is really the role that the Federal Government should be having in our lives. It comes as a shock to so many conditioned people that the Federal Government was not really supposed to effect us individuals that much at all. This Big Government Leviathan has evolved from the idea that any problem you have should be referred to the Government for a solution. Politicians and Big Bureaucrats then pass laws to take from one segment of society to give to another. Any complainers are called names in order to hopefully deflect the discussion away from the Constitution and what it allows Big Government to really do.
Here’s another T&S experiment you can do in order to observe the modern Liberal Big Government mindset at work. Arrange a situation where you can go out to dinner at a restaurant with a group of say, 6 to 10 friends that includes at least one Big Governmnt Liberal. He may likely be bragging about how Big Government was recently able get the Big Bureaucratic Helath Care Boondoggle passed that will forcefully seize the assets of some Americans in order to give something to a larger pool of prospective voters — although he may word it differently.
When the bill for the dinner arrives, tell this person that everybody at the table voted and it was decided by a simple majority that he would be paying the entire bill for everybody else. Point out that this is Democracy at work in its truest form. Majority rules! If he complains, call him a Greedy Nazi that simply wants to see people starve to death and point out that he can afford it — after all, there are some at the table who make less than him. It’s time that he pay his fair share for a change! You can also add the fact that some people can’t afford to go out to dinner at all so in actuality, this vote to make him pay for them too is actually a very noble and brave vote.
“You don’t have any authority to simply vote and decide that I have to pay for somebody else’s dinner!” he sputters, insisting that this whole vote thing is null and void. He refuses to pay for the entire table, likely not realizing the parallels to the Big Government Red Tape Health Care bill he had only just recently hailed as the work of a true genius. Either that or he does realize the point you are trying to make and simply discards any further discussion by saying that “This is different” somehow.
It is different — when it is your money that is being seized.
Go on and say that spreading the wealth around is patriotic and then give some unrelated statistics on something because statistics always sound sort of convincing and intellectual.
At this point, it would be fun to simply start making stuff up too, just to probe deeper into the psyche of the modern patriot. If he refuses to go along with the will of the people at your table and still refuses to pay the bill, put on your best straight face and say,
“You probably don’t know that there is a new law just signed by President Obama called the Be Noble and Pass it Forward Reinvestment Act of 2010. The way it works is lke this. If you are generous and noble and pay for everybody in this restaurant tonight, you lay out the money and make sure to save the receipt. When you get home, go to a Big Government web site and fill out a simple 8 page form. What will happen with this new law is that you will then get a check that includes not only reimbursement for your expenditure, but an additional 25% paid for by Big Government to encourage such noble acts everywhere.”
Now there is hope and change! Your friend is much more likely to not only pay tonight, but hey – let’s go out again tomorrow night – and bring a friend! It is much more fun when it is somebody else’s money that you are spending. And the extra 25%? Big Government can afford it. We are the richest country on the planet after all! Don’t ruin the mood by splitting hairs over the fact the Big Government has no money of its own – only what it has taken from its people.
Eat drink and be merry as this was a win-win situation for everybody tonight!
Now we’ll have the same Utopia with our health care too…
